The news of hydrogen
On the tracks of innovation: hydrogen trains
Trenord, together with FNM and FERROVIENORD, is the leader of H2iseO, the most mature hydrogen project in Italy today: an industrial value chain based on hydrogen for a sustainable mobility system in Val Camonica.
The initiative will be developed along the non-electrified Brescia-Iseo-Edolo line, the gateway to the Milan Cortina 2026 Olympic Games.
Presented in November 2020 and cited in the PNRR, H2iseO is a highly innovative project that intervenes on the social, economic, geographical and environmental dimensions of mobility, with three main objectives:
The development of an economic and industrial hydrogen supply chain, with applications in the mobility sector.
The development of a territorial hydrogen district to support the energy conversion of the area.
The complete decarbonisation of local public transport.
What does the H2iseO project involve
The project is developed through concrete and innovative interventions to transform local public transport into a completely sustainable system.
- The commissioning of 14 new hydrogen trains, which will replace the entire diesel fleet currently circulating on the line. The Coradia Stream trains, made by Alstom, are the first zero direct CO2 emission model for Italy, equipped with hydrogen fuel cells, with 260 seats and a range of over 600 km.
- The construction of three renewable hydrogen production, storage and distribution plants with no CO2 emissions:
- In Iseo: Steam Reforming technology of biomethane with CO2 capture and renewable electricity.
- In Brescia and Edolo: electrolysis technology with energy from renewable sources. - The construction of:
- A mobile refueling plant in Rovato.
- A train storage and maintenance plant in Rovato. - The technical and infrastructural adaptation of the stations involved.
- In a second phase, the commissioning of 40 hydrogen buses to replace the current fleet of FNM Autoservizi in Val Camonica.
